The new priest at Haverhill’s Catholic church has described his first Covid impacted three months in the job as the ‘most challenging start’ he has ever had at a new parish.
Father John Warrington arrived at St Felix Catholic Church in Princess Way on October 19 but since then has had barely a handful of days at services inside the church itself. His introduction to the new role has been hampered not only by two national lockdowns but also by the fact that he has to shield at home in the parish presbytery as a result of a kidney transplant he underwent at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in November 2019 that now means he is classed as clinically vulnerable. Fr John said: “I couldn’t start until October and then I only had two weekends with people in the church and then we had the second lockdown and then after that I had three Sundays in December, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and then we went into the Tier 4 restrictions on Boxing Day and I’ve been shielding ever since
“So it’s been quite frustrating because i can’t really get going. “I’ve been doing everything from home. “I’m just live streaming from the presbytery all the services and on the Sunday morning we have a priest to come and take the mass in the church and I live stream the mass from home at the same time.”
Covid restrictions mean St Felix, which can seat up to 150 worshippers in normal times, could only have 70 people at services.
